From 16-22 July of this year, the Adult Choir of Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church in Houston, in which I have been a staff singer for nigh-on-five years, will be the choir in residence at Wells Cathedral in Wells, England. Our regimem will consist of Evensong on Monday through Wednesday 16-18 July and Friday through Sunday 20-22 July with two morning Choral Eucharists on Sunday (Thursday being our free day). This is a milestone event for Palmer’s music ministry and for Palmer church in general - a trip two-and-a-half years in the planning.

Many cathedrals throughout Britain (and elsewhere, I’m sure) have guest choirs come in to fill the role normally taken by the regular choir when it is not on holiday, hence a group like Palmer’s being a choir in residence. We are lucky in that on Sunday 15 July, we get to hear the regular choir in its last Sunday worship before it goes off on summer holiday.

I have been fortunate as all-get-out to have been on a number of choir tours in past years, but this one will be different (for me, at least) because for the first time, I will be in the same place (nine nights in Wells) for, in relative terms, an extended period of time. True, we are taking numerous day-trips (Bath, for starters), but we have to unpack at a hotel only the once.

Thanks, Meka! It’s going to be a great trip.
